NATIVE HAWAIIANS TO ANNOUNCE
DELAY IN USE OF FISHING PERMITS
TO SAVE ENDANGERED HAWAIIAN MONK SEALS

Honolulu - The native and Indigenous Rights Advisory Panel (NIRAP) to the Western Pacific Region Fishery Management Council will hold a press conference at 10:00 am Friday, May 7, to discuss one of the first times a native group has chosen to defer their hard-fought federal rights in favor of an endangered species.

NIRAP members Rev. Charles Kauluwehi Maxwell, William Aila, Dawn Wasson, Tammy Harp, Bill Puleloa and Lnakanawai Hauanio will be on hand with former NIRAP Chairman Isaac Harp, to present the native Hawaiian response to fishing in areas inhabited by the endangered Hawaiian monk seal.

The press conference will be held at Pier 18, Honolulu Harbor.
