To Whom It May Concern; It is my understanding that the National Marine Fisheries Service permits longline commercial fishing vessels such as The Chris, home-based in Honolulu, HI, to receive shark fins from foreign fishing vessels. It is also my understanding that these foreign vessels are not providing your agency with the number, species, or locations of the sharks that were caught. I believe that the failure to report this critical information undermines the efforts by the United States and other countries to protect the shark population of the world. Therefore, I respectfully request the issuance of receiver or transshipment permits to American fishing vessels be stopped. Prohibiting transshipment will send a positive message to the world that the management of shark species should be taken seriously.
